Services

  • I provide strengths-based, neurodiversity affirming evaluations and therapy with the individual and family/environmental context in mind. I honor all forms of communication (vocalizations, gestures, spelling to communicate, AAC, etc.) and want to enable my clients to self-advocate for their wants/needs/desires and live autonomous, full lives of their choosing. Emotional and sensory regulation always affect communication, and I want to help my clients learn about themselves and direct them to additional services as needed.

  • I am trained in the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding, but also know that autistic eating/feeding looks different for each individual. I look at what’s needed from a nutritional and oral motor standpoint, but also look at what the individual wants/desires from food and the eating experience. I will gladly coordinate with other services (dieticians, physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, etc.) and want to help reduce individual/family stress around food.

  • Many people who stutter have a lot of emotions around their stuttering and the ways they have been treated as a result. Many family members and friends often think they’re helping the person, when in reality they are not. I work to help my clients learn fluency enhancing strategies if that is what they so desire, but also help them to work through their emotions and advocate for their communication style. It’s so important to be heard and everyone has the right to communicate and say what they want.

  • Currently, I am providing services within my clients’ home/community/school setting. I do not have an office space or a clinic at this time and will come to you! I look forward to providing support in my clients’ natural context to hopefully see them thrive in the environments they spend the most time in.

  • For some, depending on geographical location or learning preference, online services are preferred/more accessible. I offer evaluations and therapy via teletherapy and can offer direct services or a parent-coaching model if that best suits the client’s needs.

  • I would be happy to consult with your school, clinic, or organization to explore how you could become more neurodiversity affirming in your practices. There is much to learn and unlearn when living in a world where neurotypicality is the norm, and I would love to share my journey and experiences with you via education and practical applications.

About Communicating You

I’m Shalinn Silkwood, and I’m the proud owner of Communicating You. I am an American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) certified Speech-Language Pathologist with over 18 years of experience. I am licensed in Kansas and Missouri and started Communicating You as a way to provide neurodiversity affirming services with a focus on the tween, teenage, and young adult populations. I’ve worked with a variety of different ages of clients, and many things have changed in my practice over the years. Learning directly from disabled and autistic people has been key to my current practice. I want all of my clients to know that I will honor them as they are, learn from them, and help them gain the skills to be autonomous communicators. I look forward to working with you!
